Yukwah Campground is a picturesque, family-friendly campground located along the South Santiam River, 21 miles east of Sweet Home, Oregon. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s, the campground offers a mix of shady sites tucked under Douglas fir and Hemlock trees, many of which are right on the river.
The campground features 20 campsites, including double sites, sites for trailers, and sites for tents. Drinking water is available from two hand pump wells, and there are vault toilets and garbage cans conveniently located throughout the campground. Amenities include parking areas, fire pits, picnic tables, and a quiet area. Campfire wood is not readily available at the park, so campers should plan to bring their own or purchase from a nearby vendor. Linn County Parks staff may occasionally come through the campground with firewood available for purchase.
Recreation opportunities at the campground include wading and fishing in the river and strolling the half-mile long, accessible trail that winds along the banks of the South Santiam River within the campground and accesses a viewing pier over the river. The Menagerie Wilderness can be accessed from the Trout Creek Trail, which is located just a quarter mile from the campground. This trail leads to the top of Rooster Rock and offers views of the river valley. An accessible hike also leaves from this trailhead and takes visitors to the Walton Ranch Platform, offering views of the Walton Meadow.
The campground is located near several popular attractions, including the Santiam Wagon Road (now a trail), which is a historic trail used to transport livestock east across the Cascade Mountains to central Oregon’s grasslands. Iron Mountain, Gordon Meadows, and Echo Basin are nearby hiking areas known for their colorful wildflowers.
Overall, Yukwah Campground is a great choice for those looking for a peaceful, nature-filled camping experience with plenty of recreational opportunities and beautiful scenery. However, it should be noted that there are no electricity, water, or sewer site hook-ups at the campground, and reservations are required for stays on weekends and holidays.
