Santiam Flats Campground Description

Santiam Flats Campground is located just outside of the small town of Detroit, Oregon and sits at the confluence of the North Santiam River and Detroit Lake.  The campground has 32 campsites, 3 vault toilets, drinking water and excellent access to both the North Santiam River and Detroit Lake.

Santiam Flats Campground sits right between the North Santiam River and Highway 22.  Some of the campsites are actually very close to the highway which may not be the best option for some campers.  Other sites sit right next to the river/lake and the rest of the sites are on the inner loop which offer very little privacy if any at all.  Santiam Flats Campground is a popular destination for many campers as it is easy to access and offers lots of river and lake activities.

Nearby Detroit Lake is a reservoir which means its water level fluctuates depending on the time of year.  More often than not summertime campers will find that the water Levels on Detroit Lake are very low which makes lake access from the so called “lakeside campgrounds” difficult.  At Santiam Flats Campground this does not matter so much as the North Santiam River flows parallel to the campground. This means even if the lake is low campers can still easily access the river and enjoy fishing, boating and swimming.

Overall this is a decent campground especially if you can find a site that is on the river side of the campground.  The nearby highway noise should be drowned out by the sound of the roaring river.  The nearby town of Detroit is less than a five minute drive which is convenient for those last minute items you may have forgotten.
