Camped 3 nights At Union Creek-rogue river (there are multiple union creek campsites in Oregon on the GovRec booking site) a couple weekends ago, and this campground is GORGEOUS. Lots of big campsites, lots of trees, beautiful little creek running through that connects with the river (no fish when we went). So peaceful and relaxing. We wanted more days to hang around- but alas reality called. There were lots of open sites when we went, but I can imagine that this would not be the case in summer (guessing though). If it’s open, campsite #18 is prime. Great access to Crater Lake and other nearby interesting walks and the natural bridge. Also warmer and greener because lower elevation. Would definitely recommend if you want some peaceful, forested relaxation.
Went up on a Wednesday to scope it out. Only 1.5 hours from home. Camp Hose is a jerk. Acted like I was bothering him: “Whadda ya need?!” Asked how much: “$21 a night”. Ouch! Just last year (September) I was told it was $18…
Asked him about his pile of firewood for sale: “$8 each”. Ouch again! That’s about a buck and a dime a board.
Went up to camp the next day. Firewood was suddenly NINE dollars each! I said: “Went up a buck overnight, huh?” No comment from the “friendly” host. Bought one but brought a bunch of Madrone which is kind of hard to get going without lighter (soft) wood. Got #18, probably one of the best spots but at an intersection in the road so a lot of vehicle traffic and people walking dogs, making our dog bark. Would do it again but ignore the “friendly” host since you pay and drop the dough in a box. Take your unburned firewood with you or give it to another camper because the “friendly” host will pick it up and resell it!
We are heading up to Union Creek Campground and heard that no camp fires are allowed right now. Anyone have insight to that rumor?
