Hey Campers,
As summer kicks off, it’s essential to stay informed about new regulations designed to keep us all safe while enjoying the great outdoors. Starting June 1, the Bureau of Land Management will enforce annual campfire restrictions across several areas in central Oregon.
What’s Changing?
These restrictions will specifically impact the following locations:
- Portions of the Crooked, Deschutes, John Day, and White rivers.
- BLM-administered lands along Lake Billy Chinook and Lake Simtustus.
What’s Restricted?
The BLM is prohibiting:
- Campfires and charcoal fires.
- Any type of open flame.
- Portable propane campfires and wood pellet burning devices.
However, you can still use commercially manufactured lanterns and metal camp stoves fueled by bottled propane or liquid fuel, as long as you operate them responsibly. Additionally, smoking is restricted to inside vehicles or while on the water.
Why These Restrictions?
James Osborne, the Fire Management Officer for the BLM Prineville District, emphasizes the importance of safety: “Our number one goal is protecting public and employee safety. We are excited that people are getting out and enjoying the rivers. Reducing the risk of human-caused wildfire helps us be good neighbors.”
The river canyons present a unique challenge with their limited access, grassy fuels that dry out quickly, and steep slopes that can cause wildfires to spread rapidly. These conditions make it vital to take every precaution to prevent fires.
When Do These Restrictions End?
The restrictions will remain in effect through October 15, 2024. Violating these rules can lead to severe consequences, including fines up to $100,000 or imprisonment for up to 12 months, or both.
