Big Lake Campground Description
Tucked in behind Hoodoo off Santiam Summit, Big Lake is really not that big. But the campground is excellent. Most sites have great lake views and are offer privacy on the southern end of the campground and open sites on the northern end. Pit toilets, piped water, picnic tables, and fire pits.
Bonuses: fantastic swimming beaches, especially the beach at the far end of the lake, about a half mile hike. Few bother to go there, and the beach is a sandy, gentle slope, backed by forest. Patjens Lakes trail-head is nearby. Great hike to mountain lakes.

Big Lake Campground
Yes there are toilets, water pipes, picnic tables, fire pit, which are standard for most campground but our stay here were not enjoyable. First not all spots are RV friendly. We have a 21 feet RV and we barely fit in the spot that we found that would best accommodate our RV. There are plenty of mosquitoes so spray some insect repellent before you get there because once you get out of the car they’d be ready to suck the blood out of you. The surroundings are extreme fire hazards. Lots of logs and dead trees laying around. And lastly a fee of $24 a night without any hook up is not right. We’ve been to a campground in the coast, right next to a bay (probability like 5 steps away) with crabbing amenities, and full hookup for $36, and we did not dread to go out because of mosquitoes.
We would not come here again.
Of course there are mosquitos that time of the year. Try August or September and there will be much less bugs.
